Splendido Portofino

Monks, pirates and aristocrats have all played their part in the backstory of the Splendido, a Belmond Hotel, in Portofino. But it was during the dolce vita heyday that it gained true fame. This was when screen legends, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, were drawn to the glamour of the Italian Riviera and the seclusion of the former monastery.

Perched on a hillside overlooking Portofino Bay, Splendido was carefully positioned by its monastic builders to capture both the views and the sunlight. Its grounds embrace terraced, palm-filled gardens and breezy outdoor spaces. A heated saltwater pool affords dramatic views of the emerald sea and gleaming yachts below. There’s also a tennis court, gym and wellness centre and, for younger guests, a Smile Club.

Behind the Splendido’s wisteria-clad façade, beautiful rooms and suites reflect the palette of the Ligurian coast. Many enjoy balconies or terraces with captivating vistas. At night, twinkling lights among the foliage add another layer of enchantment. Celebrated Ristorante La Terrazza offers exceptional Italian cuisine overlooking the bay. It is complemented by an inviting poolside restaurant and time-honoured Piano Bar.

A courtesy shuttle or leisurely stroll takes guests into the heart of Portofino, renowned for its picturesque harbour and chic boutiques. This is also where the Splendido's sister hotel, Splendido Mare, enjoys a prime position on the vibrant Piazzetta. The Splendido’s elegant motorboat can be rented for nautical adventures. Further tailor-made activities include sunset cruises, epicurean tastings in a local ecofarm, Cinque Terre tours and exclusive visits to Genoa.
