Destination Spotlight: Denver
Referred to as the "Mile High City" due to its elevation at a mile above sea level, Denver is a city where the historic American West meets modernity. The capital city of Colorado was founded as a gold mining town in 1858. The city's roots are infused in places like Larimer Square with an array of locally-owned restaurants shops set within 19th century buildings. The Denver Mint opened in 1906 and helped to establish the city as a banking and financial center. Today, the Denver Mint is a museum, revealing the process behind the creation of coins. The recently revitalized Union Station welcomes travelers taking the University of Colorado A Line from Denver International Airport with a grand space with a Tattered Cover Bookstore (a local favorite), flower stand, restaurants, ice cream shop, and travelers departing on local and Amtrak trains.
While there's a nod to history throughout the city, Denver is a bustling cosmopolitan destination with skyscrapers and modern architecture. The theater and arts district welcomes touring shows, the Denver Art Museum showcases world-class art exhibits, and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science has more than 115,000 dinosaur, plant, and mammal fossils in its collection, many of which were found in the region. The city's multicultural routes are celebrated with a thriving food scene, along with an array of microbreweries and a growing number of regional wineries. While sports enthusiasts can take in a variety of games from baseball at Coors Field in the heart of downtown to football at Broncos Stadium at Mile High (formerly known as Invesco Field at Mile High from 2001–2010 and Sports Authority Field at Mile High from 2011–2017), and basketball, hockey, and Lacrosse at Pepsi Center.
